![]() TRAINING MINE |
Training MineDevelopment responsibility: UWAOrigin of conceptDeminers are trained using wooden or plastic dummy training mines which do not react when deminers push too hard during prodding, or even stomp on them. Some (very expensive) simulated mines incorporate representative mechanisms, but even these will only emit a faint "click". Some military training mines emit smoke when triggered, but these are expensive and can only be used once. Deminers involved with training would like a cheap training mine which makes a loud bang when deminers mishandle it. This technology would also be useful for making training UXO's etc. and would be valuable in mine awareness training as well. People in mine-affected areas are not accustomed to normal schooling. Direct experience provides a much more powerful instruction medium, but can be fatal with real ammunition. Training devices which provide a safe, yet frightening experience could be valuable for this. Our prototype has been extremely useful for demonstrating what a land mine is to the general public.
Plastic Injection Moulded Training MineWe are currently evaluating a design made from plastic which is much simpler, overcomes previous practical problems, and could be manufactured for about Au$10-00 each (in large quantities). We expect to resolve the design in February 2000 and proceed with production thereafter. Let us know if you want to order one. We would welcome collaborators to work on related devices. We will supply you with reports and working drawings, papers etc., provided
you agree to joint publications arising from this.
