TOOLS

Tools and Equipment

The other focus of our work has been tools and equipment which solve practical problems faced by deminers. The ideas arise from a careful study of deminer needs. For more on deminer needs, see our needs assessment report.

Prodder which shields a deminer's hand from blast mine explosions and makes excavation in hard ground easier and more comfortable.

The bucket and magnet assmbly.
Magnet attached to back-hoe excavator bucket collects nearly all iron fragments from the ground before metal detector is used.

Folding pocket saw which is much easier to use for cutting vegetation common in Cambodian minefields.

Remotely operated manual excavator - small and portable - for breaking up hard ground before prodding.

Training mine which makes a loud but harmless BANG when trainee deminer prods too hard.

Statistical modelling of minefield clearance data may provide more reliable ways to estimate demining costs and reveal better ways to reduce costs.

Water jets may provide a useful tool for cutting heavy vegetation without the risk of detonating mines and UXO.
