Deminer Genital Armour

Project Driver

Body armour is obviously important for deminers to protect them from a mine explosion. The University of Western Australia Demining Project is developing protection for deminers. Current products include a helmet and visor, a redesigned prodder with an integrated hand guard. Work is currently proceeding on a blast protection apron to protect the legs and torso. A genital protector is thought to be a valuable addition to this line of equipment.

Proper procedure requires that deminers work from a prone position on the ground. This is often not used because it is impractical and uncomfortable for the deminers and they prefer to squat or kneel instead. Obviously by squatting or kneeling they are exposing themselves to greater risk of serious injury. In particular the genitalia are exposed. A genital protector could prevent potentially serious injuries. A psychological benefit is also possible by reducing the risk of an injury of such a traumatising nature.

Development

HARC, the Demining Project's research partner in Pakistan has begun work on a genital protector (fig. 1). Their design uses a commercially available hardened plastic genital protector designed for sports. This is sewn inside a cover manufactured from high strength nylon fabric and fitted with easily adjustable webbing straps. The genital protector is designed to be worn above clothes and be easy to take on and off. The aim is to make the protector as convenient and comfortable as possible while still providing suitable protection.

Development of the genital protector has only just started, therefore no testing or analysis of the current design has yet been carried out. We welcome any suggestions you may have for the project.
