RESEARCH ON DOGS |
Mine Detection Dog Study ResourcesThe GICHD study on mine detection dogs, being headed by Hovard Bach, aims to improve the utilization and performace of mine detection dog teams. The study has activities such as practical field advice and training, scientific research, standards preparation and regular workshops. It is being funded by many donors. The UWA contribution has been to provide scientific support for the field study which was to have been conducted in Afghanistan starting in September 2001. Obviously that has been delayed and the postponement is a major setback for the project. Dr. Ian McLean, formerly an adjunct senior lecturer at UWA, is now working full-time for GICHD on the study. Dr. Ann Goeth worked for 6 months until it became obvious that the Afghanistan field investigation would have to be postoponed for 12 months or more. She has produced an initial scientific report reviewing what is known already about how dogs find mines. It reveals more, perhaps, about what we do not know.
