Minefield Tour - part 4

Demining operations are suspended while visitors like us are present for safety reasons. Many of the photos which follow were kindly taken for me by "Steve" (Maj Cote's driver) during inspection visits to several minefields.

 PMN-2

Mine exposed by deminer. Mine is lying upside down.

A deminer completes the excavation of a PMN-2 mine beside route 10.

PMN-2 mine.

The mine top has now been exposed. It will be blown in place at the end of the day.

(mine5.jpg)

"Frag" pit where metal pieces are collected. They will normally be consolidated in a larger pit before being released for local people to sell as scap metal.

(frag2.jpg)

Systematically sampled frag from a minefield test - background is an A4 sheet of graph paper.

(frag1.jpg)

Metal detector test - a standardised target is buried in soil similar to the demining location nearby. This checks that the detector is working properly.

This is a Schiebel detector.

Laterite in soil is a major problem in some areas which the Australian Minelab detector overcomes.
